چکیده

Pulsars emit from low-frequency radio waves up to high-energy gamma-rays, generated anywhere from the stellar surface out to the edge of the magnetosphere. Detecting correlated mode changes across the electromagnetic spectrum is therefore key to understanding the physical relationship among the emission sites. Through simultaneous observations, we detected synchronous switching in the radio and x-ray emission properties of PSR B0943+10. When the pulsar is in a sustained radio-"bright" mode, the x-rays show only an unpulsed, nonthermal component. Conversely, when the pulsar is in a radio-"quiet" mode, the x-ray luminosity more than doubles and a 100% pulsed thermal component is observed along with the nonthermal component. This indicates rapid, global changes to the conditions in the magnetosphere, which challenge all proposed pulsar emission theories.

In the relativistic plasma surrounding a pulsar, a subluminal ordinary-mode electromagnetic wave will propagate along a magnetic field line. After some distance, it can break free of the field line and escape the magnetosphere to reach an observer. We describe a simple model of pulsar radio emission based on this scenario and find that applying this model to the case of the Vela pulsar reproduc...

A Particle Simulation for the Global Pulsar Magnetosphere: the Pulsar Wind linked to the Outer Gaps

Soon after the discovery of radio pulsars in 1967, the pulsars are identified as strongly magnetic (typically 10G) rapidly rotating (∼ 10−0.1 Hz) neutron stars. However, the mechanism of particle acceleration in the pulsar magnetosphere has been a longstanding problem. The central problem is why the rotation power manifests itself in both gamma-ray beams and a highly relativistic wind of electr...

A periodically active pulsar giving insight into magnetospheric physics.

PSR B1931+24 (J1933+2421) behaves as an ordinary isolated radio pulsar during active phases that are 5 to 10 days long. However, when the radio emission ceases, it switches off in less than 10 seconds and remains undetectable for the next 25 to 35 days, then switches on again. This pattern repeats quasi-periodically. The origin of this behavior is unclear. Even more remarkably, the pulsar rotat...

Polarization transfer in pulsar magnetosphere

Propagation of radio waves in the ultrarelativistic magnetized electronpositron plasma of pulsar magnetosphere is considered. Polarization state of the original natural waves is found to vary markedly on account of the wave mode coupling and cyclotron absorption. The change is most pronounced when the regions of mode coupling and cyclotron resonance approximately coincide. In cases when the wav...

A Model for the Flaring Radio Emission in the Double Pulsar System J0737-3039

The binary J0737-3039A & B includes two pulsars in a highly relativistic orbit. The pulsed radio flux from pulsar B brightens considerably during two portions of each orbit. This phenomenon cannot be naturally triggered by the illumination of γ-rays or X-rays from pulsar A or the bow shock around pulsar B. Instead, we explain these periodic flares quantitatively as episodes during which pairs f...
